Why SUNY/Kings: My biggest priority in picking a residency is that I wanted to train in a county program that would prepare me to practice EM anywhere. I felt that Kings County absolutely embodied that while also serving the community at large.

Why SUNY/Kings: I wanted to be at a county program that cares for a diverse and vulnerable patient population in a high acuity, high volume setting. One that offers a range of social programs and engages with the surrounding community in informed, meaningful ways. Vibes of the program and people, dedication to resident wellness and teaching, a legendary training site, and the coolest city ever? Yeppp sign me up.

Why SUNY/Kings: I've always wanted to live in the city, so SUNY Downstate/Kings County stood out to me from the beginning. I was looking for a program that would provide broad clinical exposure and prepare me to become a confident physician after residency. After my interview, I visited the hospitals and met so many kind and welcoming people that I immediately knew I would fit right in.

Why SUNY/Kings: During a Sub-I in NYC, I realized pretty quickly that NYC is where I wanted to be. There’s an energy here that is one of a kind. Every day is fast-paced, exciting, and full of possibility. I chose Kings County because of its reputation for strong clinical training and for pushing residents to become exceptional physicians. I wanted to train somewhere that would challenge me and prepare me to handle whatever comes my way. I also really valued that Kings County puts a deep emphasis on fighting for the underserved urban communities that it cares for and it is a place that values diversity in all aspects, whether that be the patients or the team itself.

Why SUNY/Kings: Growing up in an Ecuadorian immigrant household shaped my commitment to caring for diverse and underserved communities, making Kings County’s mission and patient population especially meaningful to me. I also knew I wanted to train in NYC, and the Kings County graduates I met were some of the most clinically confident, thoughtful, and down-to-earth physicians I encountered.

Why SUNY/Kings: My interview at SUNY Downstate was one of the only interviews where I felt like I could truly be myself. The conversation felt easy and natural, and I felt like I really connected with the people who interviewed me. It made SUNY feel like a place where I could see myself fitting in, enjoying working with the team, and finding a family within the program.

Why SUNY/Kings County: Lived in NYC my entire life with all my friends and family nearby, and I couldn't imagine leaving the greatest city in the world. Grew up in Queens, got my degrees in Manhattan, and did my clinical rotations in the Bronx - excited to serve the underserved communities of Brooklyn in this next chapter of life.

Why SUNY/Kings: During my emergency medicine rotations at Kings County and Downstate in medical school, I quickly realized that this was a special place. The exposure to a wide breadth of pathology and trauma, the high-acuity patient population, and the sheer volume of clinical experiences made it clear that this was the ideal learning environment for me. That impression was reinforced by the strength, confidence, and camaraderie of the EM residents. I know that training here will prepare me to become an emergency physician capable of handling any challenge, and the opportunity to do so while serving the community and city that shaped me into the person I am today makes it all the more meaningful.
