Why SUNY/Kings County: I was looking for a place where I’d be happy. For me, that meant being surrounded by a diverse group of residents/staff who were passionate about social justice and providing excellent medical care to an underserved patient population. I was also looking for leadership that would prioritize my wellbeing and support the person I am outside of medicine just as much as the doctor I am in the ED.

Why SUNY/Kings County: Hands down the best thing I did in med school was working with the community at the Brooklyn Free Clinic, and the program at SUNY/Kings totally embodies that mission. Also, somehow we manage to combine the most intense clinical training with the happiest residents

Hobbies/Fun Facts: I was a humanitarian aid volunteer for ~5 years and spent time serving in Guatemala, Honduras, Germany, and S. Korea. I play 4 instruments, and I'm the oldest of 7 children.
Why SUNY/Kings County: I wanted to be at a program that would challenge me and match my passion for service to the community. I also wanted to be at a program that valued and empowered its residents in their various pursuits. I found all of that and more at Downstate/Kings. Everytime I'm on shift I know that I'm working with staff that are not only highly competent, but highly compassionate.

Why SUNY/Kings: I chose this program because of the exceptional training I knew I would receive. Training at a county hospital is special, but training at Kings is the ultimate experience. Not only will I be exposed to an insane amount of pathology and trauma, I will have had the privilege of treating the diverse patient population of Brooklyn NY. It also doesn't hurt that I get to be back in my hometown...NYC!

Why SUNY/Kings County: The history of this hospital and its foundation resonate with me on a personal level. These words inscribed on the walls of the entrance say it all, "Let all who serve here remember this building is dedicated by the city of New York to the care of all who are helpless and afflicted- this before all else”. I wanted to work at a county hospital where I would be exposed to a diverse patient population. Somewhere where I could provide underserved, uninsured, and immigrant patients the highest standard of care. Finally, I knew my clinical training here would be unparalleled.

And the close-knit community of SUNY/Kings County and Crown Heights seemed like an amazing place to call home for four years!

Why SUNY/Kings County: After location, my priority in ranking where to do residency was clinical training, by a long shot. I want to graduate residency not just clinically “competent”, but exceptional. That means being pushed to live out my potential and to grow into the best version of myself. I also want to be a part of something greater than myself. I want to have actual impact and know that even as a resident, my work matters. I want my work to be meaningful, through and through. To me, that means training where my role as a resident is vital to health system I work for, the community I serve, and the colleagues I sit beside. Nothing fit the bill like Kings County EM!
